So we have been doing activities with sight words since the beginning, but I want to reiterate what they are and why they’re important. Sight words are words that occur so often in text that we want our Lil’s to be able to read them instantly (without having to stop and sound them out) to keep their reading fluid so they are not pausing to sound out every single word. There are two types of sight word: high-frequency words [words that occur often in text (am, is, etc.)] and phonetically irregular words [words that are common but do not follow phonetic rules meaning you can’t sound them out (the, are, etc.)].
We include 10 sight words in our curriculum. These are some of the most common sight words that will set your Lil’ up with a good foundation for when they start kindergarten.

Lil’ Creators Focus Skills

Reading

  • Recognize sight words (I, my, you, is, are, the, of, and, can, like)

Writing

  • Uses writing materials to write (pencils, pens, crayons, markers)
  • Makes marks or scribbles as to represent words
  • Can form all capital letters and some lower case letters

Step #1
Print Super Read, Super Build Template.
Step #2
Focus on one word at a time.
Step #3

In the first box, read the word. It is okay if you have to tell your Lil’ the word before they are able to read it.

Step #4

In the second box, your Lil’ will build the word using letter magnets.

Step #5 (Optional)

In the final box encourage your Lil’ to write the word by tracing it.

This step is not mandatory and if your Lil’ isn’t feeling it, that is fine, just move on. The primary goal of this activity is to read the sight words, so writing them is just the icing on the cake.

Teacher Tip

Sight words are not read by sounding them out. They are memorization, so for a little while, your Lil’ will just be your parrot and that’s okay.
