This activity was inspired obviously by the book Rex Wrecks It!
This activity gives your Lil’ an opportunity to respond to literature, work on their gluing skills, and practice their shapes.

Lil’ Explorers Focus Skills

Reading

  • Interact with and recall details from a text that was read aloud
  • Make a personal connection to the text

Geometry

  • Identify common 2-dimensional shapes such as squares, rectangles, triangles, heart, star, circle, semi-circle, oval, diamond

Fine Motor Skills

  • Coordinate the use of arms, hands, and fingers together to manipulate objects with increasing accuracy
  • Engage in activities that require hand-eye coordination

Lil’ Creators Focus Skills

Reading

  • Recall details from a text that was read aloud
  • Make a personal connection to the text

Required Materials

Rex Wrecks It! Template

*Construction Paper

*Crayons

*Glue

*Scissors

*White Paper

Step #1
Print out the Rex Wrecks It! template.
Step #2
Cut various shapes (squares, half circles, rectangles, triangles) out of construction paper.
Use the shapes to represent blocks and “build” the structure by gluing the “blocks” on a piece of white paper.
Step #3
Color in your Rex and cut him out.
Step #4
Glue Rex next to the blocks to show him wrecking or about to wreck the structure.
Step #5
Ask your Lil’ to tell you about Rex from Rex Wrecks It! Record their description on another sheet of paper.
Step #6
Attach their description to their artwork.

Teacher Tip

These descriptions may be very toddler-y and hard for your Lil’ to come up with. That is OK right now; the focus is on simply responding to the literature, not necessarily responding with high quality.
