Have you noticed that your Lil’s handwriting is often sloppy and lacking coordination? Today’s activity will help your Lil’ practice controlling the small muscles in his hands and wrists so that he can begin to write with more coordination. This will also begin to prepare your Lil’ for cutting with scissors. I know that may seem odd saying writing will prepare them for cutting, however when your child practices writing they are strengthening the muscles needed to use scissors.

Lil’ Creators Focus Skills
- Uses writing materials to write (pencils, pens, crayons, markers
Fine Motor Skills
- Coordinate the use of hands, wrists, and fingers to complete tasks that require more precise movements
- Engage in activities that require hand-eye coordination with increasing accuracy
Have your child trace the top line with their finger
Use a pencil, crayon, or marker, to trace over the top line
Repeat these steps for all four lines
If your child needs a challenge, they can try to cut each line.
If they are struggling to hold the writing utensil, they can try using Play Doh to trace the lines.
To make cutting on the line easier, cut horizontally in between each line so that each line is on its own strip of paper. You should end up with four separate strips of paper that are easier to manipulate instead of one big, bulky piece of paper. Doing this will allow your Lil’ to focus on the line they are working on and is much more fun.
