By now most of our kids can perform gross motor skills with relative ease, however, that does not mean that we stop working on them. By around the age of 2 1/2 and up we are less focused on learning to walk or run and we are more focused on how to fine-tune those gross motor skills so they can do things like getting dressed.

We are going to create an animal movement obstacle course to work on our gross motor skills. 

This preschool activity is a fun way to develop those gross motor skills.

  • Use locomotor skills with balance in a variety of directions
  • Use locomotor skills with coordination in a variety of directions
  • Engage in non-locomotor body movements with balance and coordination (Stand on tip toes and raise your arms)
  • Utilize spatial awareness during physical activity

Gross Motor Skills

  • Use locomotor skills with balance in a variety of directions and changing directions during active play
  • Use locomotor skills with coordination in a variety of directions and changing directions during active play
  • Engage in non-locomotor body movements with balance, coordination, and control (twist and bend)
  • Utilize spatial awareness in active play

Move Like an Animal Obstacle Course Template

*Scissors

Step #1

Print and cut out the Move like an Animal Obstacle Course Cards. 

Step #2

Create a path for your Lil’ to move along.

Step #3

Lay out the movement cards along the path being sure to spread them out.

Step #4

Invite your Lil’ to engage in the obstacle course. Be sure that at each card they change their movement.

Teacher Tip

You can easily do this in a small space and eliminate the obstacle course portion of the activity by drawing the cards and completing the movement on each card.
