When we first begin to introduce the concept of measurement to children, we do so using non-standard measurement tools which is teacher talk for ‘we don’t use a ruler.’ Instead we use objects because that is a concrete idea that our Lil’s can grasp onto versus the idea of inches or centimeters which is very abstract to them.
So today we are going to be measuring some medical tools, or pictures of medical tools, using band-Aids as our unit for measuring.

Step #1
Print and cut out a copy of the Measuring Medical Tools Template.
Step #2
Remove about five Band-Aids from their packaging.
Step #3
Lay Band-Aids end to end across the needle to measure how many Band-Aids long the needle is.
Step #4
Repeat this process for all of the medical tools.

Teacher Tip

Be sure to discuss the results. “Wow the needle is 3 band aids long!”

You can also encourage predictions by saying things like, “Do you think the stethoscope is longer or shorter than the needle?”
