Recalling details is one of the most iconic reading comprehension strategies; you read a book and then tell someone what the book was about. It is an important part of reading as reading is made up of two parts – decoding the words and understanding/making meaning of the words.
Today as we are going to read If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and complete a short sequence map that teaches your Lil’ about retelling a story.

Step #1
Print and cut the If You Give a Mouse a Cookie Sequencing Template.
You are only cutting the page with the pictures.
Step #2
While reading the book, identify to your Lil’ what happens at the beginning, the middle, and the end by filling out the sequencing chart with the pictures.
  • First the boy offers the mouse a cookie.
  • Then the mouse draws a picture.
  • Finally, the boy gives the mouse another cookie with milk.
Step #3
After you have read the book, ask your Lil’ to complete the sequencing.

Teacher Tip

Sequencing the book on their own will be a challenging skill, especially for our Lil’ Explorers. It is okay if you are modeling this for your Lil’ as they are learning just by watching you do it and eventually they will surprise you and do it on their own.
