Alright ya’ll this is our last time using our fossils from our Making Fossils activity. This time we will be using the fossils we made and cutting them into pieces. We will also be using the moon sand we made in our Fossil Excavating activity.
This was a challenging activity and will definitely have your Lil’ engaging their problem solving skills.

Required Materials

Cookie Cutter Fossils

Flour

*Baby Oil

*Plastic Tub

*Dinosaur Cookie Cutter (Optional)

Step #1
Pour moon sand in a plastic bin.
We used the moon sand recipe from Tinkerlab.
  • Combine 4 cups of flour with 1/2 cup of oil.
  • Mix and play.
Step #2
Bury the cookie cutter fossil pieces in the sand.
Step #3
Have your Lil’ use a paint brush to excavate the fossils.
Step #4

Once all the pieces are excavated rebuild the dinosaur just as a paleontologist does with dinosaur bones.

Teacher Tip

You may need to use the cookie cutter as a guide for how the fossil is supposed to look. You can do this activity with the Dinosaur Excavating activity, this way your Lil’ is only excavating once.
