The primary social skill we’ve been focusing on this month is following directions. Following directions is a vital skill for everyone. Whether your little is preparing for kindergarten or staying home with you, everyone will benefit from your little knowing how to follow directions.
Today I’m sharing with you a social story on how to just that. In case you’re not familiar with social stories, they are very simple, short passages that explicitly explain specific social situations. These are not thrilling or entertaining stories since that is not their intent; instead they are stories that teach a very specific skill.

Step #1
Print out our social story or open it on a tablet and read it as an eBook.
Step #2

Read the social story on following directions to your child. Talk about following directions with your child, use specific examples from your life. For instance you can say, “when mommy asked you to pick up your toys and you put them all away you were doing a great job following directions.”

Teacher Tip

Be sure to praise your child for following directions when they complete a task after you asked and be specific in your praise. After you ask your child to put away their toy and they comply say, “thank you for following directions by putting away your toy.” Specific praise like this vs “good job” tells your child that x action was following directions and that is a good thing.
