When I was in the classroom, I co-taught with another teacher. She taught reading while I taught math and science. During that time, I noticed that I had a lot of students who did not have a strong enough foundation in basic math concepts. So, while I know that some of your kids may have mastered identifying their numbers, I think it’s important that we go beyond just counting in order and identifying numbers. We need to really take the time to focus on number values and numbers relationships to other numbers. That is why you will see that my content does not go beyond the number 20. I feel that it is most important that we build a strong foundation on numbers 0-20 during our preschool years and then in kindergarten they will be able to build off that foundation with a strong number sense base.
Our Jack and the Beanstalk inspired number activity requires your preschooler to organize numbers in their correct order and build their values.
Lil’ Explorers Focus Skills
- Count from 0-10 (0-3)
- Understand values of numbers 0-20 (0-3)
Lil’ Creators Focus Skills
- Count from 0-20 (16-20)
- Understand values of numbers 0-20 (16-20)
Print and cut out the Counting Beanstalk template.
On a piece of butcher paper draw a large beanstalk.
Invite your preschooler to place the leaves in order on the beanstalk you drew.
Add the corresponding number of beans to each leaf.
For Lil’ Creators who are going all the way up to the number 20, if placing that many beans on each leaf is getting tiresome, skip the leaves with the smaller values and focus on only putting the beans on numbers 16 through 20 as those are our focus numbers for the month.
