It is time to put the fossils we made to good use!
If you haven’t made fossils yet, go check out our Making Fossils activity to learn how.
Being able to compare objects by their size using terms like big and small or even biggest and smallest will allow your Lil’  to work on their categorization and sorting skills as well as their writing and descriptive skills.

Bones from Making Fossils Activity

*White Paper

*Markers

Explorers
  • On a plain white sheet of paper label one side small and the other side big.
  • Give your Lil’ two of the bones that you made during our making fossils activity and ask them to determine which one is small and which one is big.
  • Repeat step two multiple times using different bones.
Creators
  • On a plain white sheet of paper label one side smallest and the other side biggest.
  • Sort at least three or four bones from smallest to biggest.

Teacher Tip

When your Lil’ is comparing, ask them, “how do you know?” Hopefully you will get some sort of answer about how they put the two bones next to each other and could see that one was smaller than the other.

This “how do you know” question is huge in math. As a math teacher I cared less about a child getting the right answer and more about them being able to tell me how they got that answer and why their thought process worked.
