You are going to notice a trend on this blog when it comes to math lessons; we focus on patterns A LOT! That is for two reasons: one, it happens to be one of the focus skills for this month and two, patterns are essential for ALL math skills. Every math skill is based on patterns. Counting is a pattern, basic arithmetic is the use of patterns, and complicated algorithms are derived from patterns. Essentially, math is ALL ABOUT PATTERNS! So with that in mind, we are going to practice identifying patterns using pictures in a way that feels like a game to your Lil’ so that their brain becomes trained to identify patterns and as they get older and the patterns get more complex, they will be ready. As an added bonus, we are using cards that have C’s, caterpillars, and carrots on them so that you can also practice the letter C and the sound it makes.
Lil’ Explorers Focus Skills
- Create simple A-B or A-B-B repeating patterns
- Can identify all capital letters and some sounds (C)
- Print and cut out the pattern cards (Grab your FREE template HERE)
Lay out four cards in an A-B-A-B pattern and invite your Lil’ to continue the pattern
Once they have completed this invite them to try another pattern:
Your Lil’ might not be ready for more complicated patterns like the options in step 3, that is okay. You can create patterns leaving a blank and ask your Lil’ to fill in the blank, for instance A-B-A-__-A.
Let us know in the comments how this lesson went for your Lil’ and be sure to share with us the different patterns your Lil’ created! We love to see them grow!
